How to report and remove fake Google reviews

A one-star review appears overnight from somebody you have never served. It mentions a service you do not offer, the reviewer has no photograph and no other reviews, and it now sits at the top of your listing for every new customer to read. It feels personal and urgent. There is a process that works, and the most damaging thing you can do is react before you follow it.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Check the review is genuinely fake, screenshot it, then report it from your Business Profile under Reviews, using the reason that matches Google’s policy. Track it in Google’s review management tool and appeal once if it stays. Reply calmly in public while you wait. Google removes reviews that break its policies, not reviews that are simply negative, so the lasting defence is a steady flow of genuine reviews.

Signs a review is fake

None of these proves a review is fake on its own, but two or three together are a strong signal.

What Google will and will not remove

REMOVED

Reviews that break Google’s policies

Fake or spam reviews, reviews written with a conflict of interest such as by a competitor or ex-employee, off-topic content, offensive or hateful language, harassment, and personal information.

NOT REMOVED

Reviews you simply disagree with

Genuine customers giving a low rating, an opinion you think is unfair, or an account of a visit you remember differently. These stay, however much they hurt.

Matching your report to the right policy is the single biggest factor in whether it succeeds. “This is unfair” is not a reason Google acts on. “This person has never been a customer and the review is fake” is.

Step by step: reporting a fake review

1

Pause before you reply

Do not respond in anger, and do not accuse the reviewer publicly. An emotional reply is read by every future customer and stays long after the review is gone.

2

Check whether it is really fake

Search your bookings, receipts and staff memory for the customer. A harsh review from a real customer is not fake, and Google will not remove it for being negative.

3

Record the evidence

Screenshot the review, the reviewer’s profile and the date. Note why you believe it is fake: no record of the customer, a service you do not offer, or a burst of similar reviews.

4

Report it from your Business Profile

Open your profile, go to Reviews, choose the three dots next to the review, then Report review. Pick the reason that matches the policy breach, such as spam or fake content, conflict of interest, or off topic.

5

Track it and appeal once

Use Google’s review management tool, linked from Business Profile help, to check the status of your report. If Google decides the review stays, you can appeal once, adding any new evidence.

6

Reply calmly in public

While you wait, post a short, factual reply. State that you have no record of the visit and invite the reviewer to contact you directly. Readers judge the reply as much as the review.

7

Use the legal route only for unlawful content

If a review is defamatory or unlawful, Google has a separate legal removal request. For serious cases, take advice from a solicitor.

8

Dilute it with genuine reviews

You cannot stop fake reviews arriving, but a steady flow of real ones limits the damage any single review can do.

What to say in your reply

Keep it short, factual and polite. You are writing for the next hundred customers, not the reviewer.

“Thank you for your feedback. We take every review seriously, but we have no record of a visit matching this description. If you have been a customer, please contact the manager directly on [phone or email] so we can look into it properly.”

Do not accuse the reviewer of lying, threaten action, or reveal anything about real customers. Our reply templates guide has more wording.

The lasting defence: genuine reviews

You cannot stop fake reviews arriving. You can control how much damage one does. A single one-star review on a profile with ten five-star reviews pulls the average down to about 4.6. On a profile with a hundred, the same review moves it to about 4.96, and it disappears below the newest reviews within days.

That is why the businesses least troubled by fake reviews are the ones collecting real reviews every week. Ask every customer, in person, at the end of their visit, and the occasional fake becomes a footnote instead of a headline.

A stand makes steady the default

An EvoMaxTap stand sits on your counter, programmed to your Google review link. Staff point at it, the customer taps their phone, and your review box opens directly. Reviews arrive from real people who were just in your business, every week, so no single review, fake or genuine, can define you.

Common questions

Can I get a fake Google review removed?

Yes, if it breaks Google’s policies. Reviews that are fake or spam, written with a conflict of interest, off topic, offensive, or containing personal information can be removed after you report them. Google will not remove a review just because it is negative or you disagree with it.

How do I report a fake review on my Google Business Profile?

Open your Business Profile, go to Reviews, choose the three dots next to the review and select Report review. Choose the reason that matches the policy breach. You can also flag a review from Google Maps.

How long does Google take to remove a reported review?

There is no fixed timescale. Some reports are handled within days, others take longer. You can check the status in Google’s review management tool, and appeal once if the review is not removed.

What if Google refuses to remove the fake review?

Appeal once through the review management tool with any new evidence. If the review is defamatory or otherwise unlawful, you can submit a legal removal request. Meanwhile, reply calmly and focus on collecting genuine reviews.

Should I reply to a fake review?

Yes, briefly and calmly. Say you have no record of the visit and invite the reviewer to contact you. Do not accuse them of lying or reveal any customer details. Future customers read your reply.

Are fake negative reviews illegal in the UK?

Writing or commissioning fake reviews, positive or negative, is a banned practice under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024. Our UK fake reviews law guide covers what that means for businesses.

What if I am getting lots of fake reviews at once?

Report each one, and contact Business Profile support describing the pattern. Google may temporarily limit new reviews on a profile during unusual activity. Keep records of every review and report.

Do you offer support?

Yes. We are a UK team and you can reach us seven days a week during normal office hours at sales@evomaxtap.com. We cannot report reviews on your behalf, but we are happy to point you in the right direction.
