Google reviews for restaurants, cafés and bars: the bill moment

Diners are never more willing to write a review than when they are still at the table, full, happy and enjoying the atmosphere. Once they pay the bill, put on their coats and walk out of the door, their focus shifts entirely to the next place they are going. A review link on an email receipt hours later arrives long after the feeling has gone.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Ask at the table when the card machine or bill arrives, in one sentence, and give the diner something to tap there and then. In bars and cafés, put a stand on the counter beside the card reader. Set the most specific category you can, keep hours and menus exact, reply to every review, and say the same line to every table without offering anything in return.

Why hospitality is different

DIFFERENCE 01

The decision is made on a phone, in minutes

People choose where to eat tonight from the map, often standing in the street. Star rating, review count and how recent the reviews are decide it in seconds.

DIFFERENCE 02

The feeling fades fast

A great meal is an experience in the moment. Unlike a new kitchen or a house sale, there is nothing to remind the diner the next day.

DIFFERENCE 03

One bad night gets written up

A slow service or a cold plate produces a review on the way home. Hundreds of good evenings say nothing unless somebody asks.

Set up the listing for diners

1

Pick the category diners search for

Use the most specific primary category that fits: Italian Restaurant, Café, Gastropub, Cocktail Bar and so on, rather than just Restaurant. Add secondary categories for anything else you genuinely are, such as Brunch Restaurant.

2

Keep hours and menus exact

Wrong opening hours are one of the most damaging things a hospitality listing can show. Update bank holidays, seasonal changes and private-event closures in advance, and link to a current menu.

3

Use the hospitality attributes

Outdoor seating, dog friendly, vegan options, step-free access, takes bookings. Diners filter on these, and each one gives Google another way to match you to a search.

4

Add real photographs, often

Dishes, the room at a busy moment, the bar and the front of the building. Recent photographs show you are open and active.

5

Reply to every review

Diners read replies, especially to critical reviews. Thank the good ones by mentioning what they enjoyed, and answer complaints calmly with an invitation to get in touch.

6

Ask at the table, every service

The rest of this guide covers the moment and the words.

The bill-presenter trigger

The best moment in any meal to ask is the minute the bill arrives. The food is finished, the diner is still seated and relaxed, and they are already reaching for a phone or card. Nothing else is competing for their attention yet.

Where to place it: on the bar top in bars and counter-service cafés, beside the card reader. In table-service restaurants, bring the stand to the table with the card machine and the receipt, or keep one at each server station so it is always to hand.

The script: when dropping off the card machine or change, the server says:

“Thank you so much for dining with us tonight. If you enjoyed the food, you can tap your phone right here on the stand to leave the kitchen team a quick review before you head out!”

Crediting the kitchen team matters. It makes the review feel like thanks to the people who cooked, not a favour for the business, and diners are far more willing to do the first.

Making it work every service

A stand where the bill lands

An EvoMaxTap stand is programmed to your Google review link, so a diner taps their phone and your review box opens directly. No searching for your name, no app and no QR code to line up in dim light. On the bar it sits beside the card reader. In the dining room it travels to the table with the card machine. Either way, the ask happens while the diner is still in their seat and still enjoying the evening.

Common questions

When is the best time for a restaurant to ask for a Google review?

When the bill or card machine arrives at the table. The meal is over, the diner is still seated and pleased, and they are already holding their phone or card. Once they stand up and put their coats on, their attention has moved to wherever they are going next.

Do email receipts with a review link work?

They bring in some reviews, but far fewer than asking at the table. An email arrives hours later, when the evening is over and the diner is doing something else. Most are never opened with a review in mind.

Where should the stand go in a restaurant?

Where the conversation about the bill happens. In table-service restaurants, bring a stand to the table with the card machine, or keep one at each server station. In bars and counter-service cafés, place it on the bar or counter beside the card reader.

What should the server say?

Keep it to one sentence as the card machine arrives: Thank you so much for dining with us tonight. If you enjoyed the food, you can tap your phone right here on the stand to leave the kitchen team a quick review before you head out! Then leave the table and let them decide.

Is it against Google's rules to ask diners for reviews?

No. Google allows businesses to ask customers for reviews. It prohibits offering anything in return, such as a free dessert or drink, and asking only the tables you expect to be happy. Say the same line to every table.

What if a table has had a problem?

Put it right first, before the bill. A problem handled well at the table often turns into a warmer review than a meal where nothing went wrong. Then offer them the same chance to review as everyone else.

Does a stand work in a busy bar?

Yes. Place it on the bar beside the card reader, where customers already stop to pay. Bar staff can point at it as they hand back the card, without breaking the flow of service.

Do you offer support?

Yes. We are a UK team and you can reach us seven days a week during normal office hours at sales@evomaxtap.com.
